The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has commended the University Basic School contestants who participated in the 5th African Spelling Bee Championship in Blantyre, Malawi. 

The contestants- Master Kobina Adu Ampah-Mensah (Primary School) and Master Edem Segbenya (from JHS) – distinguished themselves at the competition and placed third, with spellers from Nigeria and Malawi taking the first and second positions respectively. 

Prof. Boampong added that the competition was not all about winning but there  was so much to learn from the experiences. 

The Vice-Chancellor gave the plaudits when the participants presented to him trophies won at the 2022 African Spelling Bee competition.

Prof. Boampong described the competition as good training for students to understand the use of words and not only to memorise, explaining that children from Ghana were as capable as their colleagues around the world.

He encouraged them not to rest on their oars but learn hard to excel in their academic pursuits. 

He gave assurance that management of the University would continue to support the Basic School team to win more laurels to enhance the image of the UCC. 

He commended staff of the University Basic School for guiding the contestants.

Earlier, the Coach of the University Basic School, Mr. Pascal Saanye, noted that the competition also helped contestants to develop self-confidence, public speaking skills, their ability to thrive under pressure, and compete with confidence.

He also disclosed to management that eight contestants from the Basic School also performed creditably at the Inter-Continental Spelling Bee Championship held in Dubai, UAE. 

The contestants, according to Mr. Saanye, were presented with medals, certificates and trophies. 

While thanking Management of the University for its support, the winners, on their part, said they would build on the experiences garnered during the competition to improve their spellings and learning abilities to prepare themselves for future competitions.
