The University Junior High School, has held its 18^th Awards Day Celebration with a call on teachers and parents to train their children to eschew all forms of littering in order to reduce the poor sanitary conditions in the country.

The programme was on the theme “Keeping a Healthy Environment: The Civic Duty of the Ghanaians Child”.

In his opening remarks, the Director of the Directorate of Legal Consular and General Services, Mr. Moses Abnory, commended the organisers the choice of  theme and stressed on the importance of keeping one’s environment clean and healthy as it behoves on all citizens of the country.

In a speech read by Professor David .K. Essuman, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghatey-Ampiah, he encouraged the students to educate their parents and friends to desist from indiscriminate littering and eschew all habits that endangers the environment. He further advised them to participate in communal labour in their vicinities and join educational campaigns against diseases such as Cholera, Malaria, Dysentery among others.

On her part, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Kate Frimpong, reported that the school has retained its enviable first position in the Cape Coast Metropolis Basic Education Certificate Examination. She stated that “In 2017, our school A placed first, school B placed 2^nd, school C placing 3rd, with school D and School E placing 13^th and 33^rd respectively out of 105 schools that took part in the B.E.C.E”. She identified inadequate infrastructure, lack of a school library, science laboratory and poor student enrollment and staffing as some of the challenges facing the school. Mrs. Frimpong commended the past students, staff parents and other philantropists for contributing to the school’s success.  

The head prefect, Master Papa Kobina Osei-Amanfu, applauded the good work by the past prefects and elaborated some of their achievements as well as challenges during their tenure of office.

 Awards were presented to deserving students who performed excellently during the academic year. Special awards were also given to teachers of the school including two female teachers who have retired for their selfless service to the School in the areas of teaching and learning.  

The school’s cultural troupe, Apam Kor, spiced up the celebration with some rich cultural display.
