New executives of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Local National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) have been sworn into office for the 2020/21 academic year.

Good Ambassadors of UCC

Speaking at the programme, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, congratulated the incoming executives and encouraged them to be good ambassadors of the University. Prof. Boampong assured them that the doors of the Management would always be opened to hear their concerns and suggestions. He urged them to work with the university to help maintain the COVID-19 protocols.

Truth Be Your Guide

The Dean of Students, Prof. Eugene K.M. Darteh, explained that the process of selecting executives for the academic year had been quite challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He commended the vetting and electoral committees for their hard work during the entire process. He encouraged the elected student leaders to let the truth be their guide during their tenure of office.

Implement Ideas 

The Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, Prof. Sarah Darkwah, encouraged the student leaders to put into practice the content of their speeches. She advised them to work in harmony with the university Management and let truth and honesty guide them. She also urged the student leaders to work hard to achieve their aims, so that other executives yet to come could also emulate them.

Welfare

The new GRASAG President, Mr. Eric Adjei, in his inaugural address, pledged to take up the unfinished business of improving the welfare of postgraduate students and building a strong sense of leadership for the next members of the association. “I promise to work in harmony with other members of the Executive Council, the Senate, and the Judicial Board to ensure the welfare of graduate students in UCC is fought for”, he said.

Unity

On his part, the new SRC President, Mr. Christopher E. Dadson, in his inaugural speech promised to rally and unite all student voices and all student governance structures for the common good. “We wish to boldly assert that if the beacon of hope for the student front at any point in time seemed dwindled, then we assure you that hope is here, and we are here to rekindle it.”, he said. He urged the other SRC executives, saying “We are duty-bound to provide honest and inspiring leadership that will light the path and motivate the student populace to contribute their quota to the development of this institution.”

The Registrar, Mr. Jeff Teye Onyame administered the oath of office to the new executives.
Present at the ceremony were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh, and some senior members.
