Three officials of the Ghana National Association of the Deaf led by the Executive Director, Mr. James M. Sambian have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah at his office to discuss possible ways of starting a course in Sign Language Interpretation in the University of Cape Coast.

This is to afford the Deaf in the society access tertiary education and enable them get employment in the formal sector.   The association has secured funding from the Danish government for a three-year period, ending 2018 to support the running of the course.

The Executive Secretary, Mr. Sambian, took the opportunity to congratulate the Vice-Chancellor on his appointment and said he was hopeful that the association could achieve its dream of starting a course that would culminate possibly in the award of a certificate or diploma.

The association in a citation presented to the Vice-Chancellor commended him for his effort, selfless and social work towards Deaf-Education in Ghana noting that “As an all-round educationist, we hope you will remain an Icon of hope and progress”. 

The Vice-Chancellor welcomed the idea of training people who would be trained to become beneficial to the society as well as to help equip people with hearing impairment to enable them contribute meaningfully to nation building. He said the document would be studied and fine-tuned for onward submission to the Academic board for approval.

“We will do our best, so that the course can start in 2017”.
