A day's capacity building workshop on lean management has been held for office holders and administrators in the School of Allied Health Sciences.

The aim of the workshop was to equip staff with practical tools and techniques in lean management principles to enable them to lead and sustain lean initiatives in their departments.

Lean management is a systematic approach that reduces waste, improves efficiency, and creates greater value for customers/clients. This management approach prioritises efficiency, continuous improvement, and customer value.

The workshop brought together Heads of Department, Departmental Registration and Examination Officers (DREOs), lecturers, Administrators and Account Officers within the School.

The workshop was facilitated by the Faculty Officer of SAHS, Mr. Matthew Quaidoo, whose focus was on " Principles of Lean Management and Lean Culture."

A Research Assistant at the Department of Biomedical Science, Ms. Sandra Asiful, also took participants through the topic:" Lean Management Tools and Techniques."

The workshop comes on the back of a Project Action Plan (PAP) being implemented by the Dean of SAHS, Prof. Desmond Omane Acheampong, titled: “Developing a Training Manual for Capacity Building in Lean Management for Office Holders in the School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS).”

Prof. Desmond Omane Acheampong

PAP seeks to enhance the administrative and managerial efficiency of office holders and administrators by equipping them with practical Lean Management skills to reduce waste and optimize resource use within the university system.

Opening the workshop, Prof. Desmond Omane Acheampong, urged participants to take full advantage of the one-day training session to learn as much as they could to embrace lean thinking and philosophy to continuously improve processes, enhance efficiency and strive to deliver value for their stakeholders, especially students at the various departments.

He added that beyond the lean tools and techniques, office holders and administrators ought to be intentional and consistent about implementing lean initiatives.

He urged the participants to build and sustain lean culture.

The Dean called for the need to reduce waste in all facets of the University’s operations to harness the little resources available to provide quality services to students and deliver value for all stakeholders.

Prof. Acheampong, who was recently named among 30 distinguished African leaders selected for the 2025–2026 cohort of the DIES International Deans’ Course (IDC) Africa, said a proposal will be submitted to management on the need to practise lean management in critical areas of the University’s operations.
