The Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (N&M), Ghana, Mr Felix Nyante, has led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, as part of a working visit to the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The delegation led by the Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council, was accompanied by the head of the Publications Unit, Mrs Mariam Bilson, Risk Management Officer-Cape Coast, Mrs Akosua Cyril.

Purpose of Visit                               

Explaining the purpose of the visit, the Dean, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Dorcas Obiri-Yeboah said the team was in the University to discuss some issues concerning the School of Nursing and Midwifery with University management.  She indicated that as part of the visit, the team would have a training workshop with lecturers of the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Admission Quota for Universities

On his part, Mr Nyante called on the University Management to make available a forecast of admission of students into the School of Nursing and Midwifery, to enable the Ministry of Health plan and budget for them before they graduate. He explained that the forecast would help the Ministry to fully implement the Quota System in the University to regulate the number of students in relation to the training equipment and the lecturers available to ensure the training of quality of nurses in the country. He further indicated that the enrolment plan would help address the issue of unemployment of nursing students after completion of their studies.

Unique Admission Requirements

The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. Edu-Buandoh on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor thanked the team for the visit and was excited that the discussions would focus on issues that would improve the training of students. She explained that the general basic entry requirements for every Faculty/School and Department were unique from each other. She noted that the School would continue to adhere to the professional standards and regulation by the N&MC as far as admission and academic work were concerned.  She assured the delegation that the Quota System would be discussed at the management level for the necessary actions to be taken.

Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mr John Kofi Nyan, the Director, Academics, Mr Jeff Teye Oyame and the Dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Prof. Moses Jojo Eghan.

The delegation later held a workshop for faculty members of the School of Nursing and Midwifery to discuss issues affecting them as well as addressing their concerns.
