The Osibisa Band has thrilled staff and students of the Department of Music and Dance to some old melodious collections at a live concert on campus. The Concert dubbed “Going Global with Your Music, the Osibisa Experience” was aimed at sharing the experience of Osibisa and also inspire the students to put in more effort to make impact with their music. The live band musical performances, held at the Music Laboratory, won the hearts of many music lovers, who were treated to an unforgettable tunes from Osibisa. The band, led by Bessa Simons, entertained the excited audience with their fusion of music in Africa, Caribbean, Jazz, funk, rock and R&B. The Music Laboratory went agog when the good old Teddy Osei, a founding member of the band, took the stage to perform to the joy and ecstasy of the students and staff. The audience had a good feel of some record label of Osibisa tunes which moved most of them unto their feet to dance and sing alongside him. A former Head of the Department of Music and Dance, Dr. Mawuyram Q. Adjahoe, expressed gratitude to the band for the sterling performance. He urged students of the Department to take lessons from the band and continually rehearse vigorously so as to achieve similar feat. He appealed to management of the University to assist the Department to acquire new instruments for its teeming students. The Coordinator of the performance, Bessa Simons, said the event was to share his experience in music and to motivate anyone, especially students in tertiary institutions aspiring to become a musician. He added that the band had already performed at some public universities in the country, adding that “we want to get other people who have written songs and want to get it out there to give us a variety well-arranged music.” Mr. Simons called for other benevolent organisations to come to the assistance of the band in order to reach out to the up and coming musicians in tertiary institutions. He encouraged the students to take their studies and practical lessons seriously and rehearse every day to improve their musical skills. The Osibisa band, founded in London in 1969, is known for its popular songs such as “Welcome Home”, “We are going (Woyaya)”, "Pete Pete", “Black Ant”, “The Coffee Song” amongst others.
