Family of Late Elolo Gharbin has donated books to the Department of Theatre and Film Studies
The Department of Theatre and Film Studies has received a rare collection of theatre books from the family of the late Mr. Elolo Gharbin, a former lecturer at the Department who passed away in 2020.
The family, led by Mrs. Sally Gharbin, sister of the deceased, made the donation to the Department for honouring the memory of the late Elolo Gharbin by naming the Department's theatre seasons held every academic semester after him.
"... The late Gharbin had a library of books on theatre and Film Studies which he left behind. The family has decided to donate this library of books to the Department," she added, to a rapturous applause from the audience at the launch of the 2023 Elolo Gharbin Theatre Season.
The Head of the Department, Mr. Xornam Atta-Owusu, who received the books, expressed gratitude to the Gharbin family and promised that the books would be protected for posterity.
He described the late Elolo Gharbin as a great pillar in the Department and noted that the late scholar’s drive and love for knowledge was unparalleled.
The Department of Theater and Film Studies of University of Cape Coast was established in 2004.
In its formative years, the Department had only one lecturer, Mr. Elolo John Gharbin. Mr. Gharbin taught almost all the courses offered by the Department until about the second or third year when other lecturers were employed to teach courses in theater.
In September 2020, he passed on and the Department named the theater season after him.
