A delegation from the Ghana National Association of the Deaf (GNAD) has called on the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. George K. T. Oduro, at the Council Chamber to follow up on the introduction of sign Language Interpreters Course in the University. During the meeting, the Head of the delegation, Mr. James Sambian, who is also the Executive Director of GNAD, said the visit was to acquaint themselves with the project document GNAD submitted to the University management a couple of months ago. According to him, the Course, when introduced, would train sign language interpreters so they could be deployed to various sectors of the country. Apart from Uganda and South Africa, he said, Ghana would be the first African country to get the opportunity to have Sign Language Interpreters course in Sub-Sahara. He called on management of the University to expedite action on the introduction of the course, which barring any unforeseen circumstances is expected to kick start in June 2017. Receiving the delegation, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor said management was committed to introducing the course in the University. However, he added that management was going through the proposal to fit the academic house style of the University. Prof. Oduro assured Mr. Sambian and his accompanying delegation that the programme would commence on schedule. The GNAD delegation was made up of Mr. Kasper Bergmann, Development Officer at the Danish Deaf Association, Denmark; Mrs. Charlotte Torp Mollei, the Programme Manager and Mr. Kwame Ansrei, the Programme Manager. In attendance were Mr. Jeff Onyame, Director of Academics; Mr. Felix Adu Poku, an Assistant Registrar at the Directorate of Public Affairs, Mr. Nasir Entsie, a Junior Assistant Registrar at the Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s Office.
