A delegation from Uganda, tasked to oversee the realization of the first public university in the country’s Bunyoro region, has completed a day's benchmarking and familiarisation visit to the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The six-member Bunyoro University Task Force, headed by Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa, was appointed by Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to visit top-ranked universities in Africa to have first-hand information about their academic programmes and adopt same for Bunyoro University.

Consequently, the Bunyoro University Task Force visited UCC management to learn best practices regarding UCC’s academic programmes.

Prof. Kyamanywa said he was appointed on June 7th, 2022, as Vice-Chancellor by the government per the Universities and other tertiary institutions Act 2001, as amended to Operationalise Bunyoro University to fulfil a long-standing aspiration of the Bunyoro people, dating back over 30 years. 

He explained that the university had been the long-awaited game changer to improve higher education for learners in the entire sub-region.

He was optimistic that the academic programmes offered by UCC would help the task force to introduce them in the long-awaited Bunyoro University.

For his part, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Denis Aheto, receiving the delegation, expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for choosing UCC for the benchmarking exercise.

He took the task force through the academic programmes offered at UCC that enriched the delegation’s understanding and determination to establish a distinctive public university in Bunyoro.

Prof. Aheto told the visiting delegation that UCC was ready to assist the task force with its wealth of academic experience and expertise.

Other members of the Ugandan delegation included Prof. Grace Bantebya (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs), Dr. Steven Tusiime Assimue (University Secretary), Mr. Erisho Obella (Academic Registrar), Mrs. Deborah Apoya Owiri (University Bursar) and Mr. Ssemakwala Henry (Ministry of Education and Sports).
